Accessible Building

45 Minutes

Grade level: Grades 6-8

Big idea

In this engineering lesson, students will explore Universal Design concepts and create a prototype for an assistive device.

In the Film

Our world is built and designed for a certain kind of human — one with two arms, two legs, who stands at a median height and weighs a median weight. However, there are people like Ty Duckett from the film who have different physical characteristics that engineers and architects should take into consideration when designing items, buildings, and other spaces.

Objectives

  1. Students will work in teams to design and demonstrate a prototype that allows a user with a limb difference to open a drawstring bag.

NGSS Standards

MS-ETS1-1: Engineering Design
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
